5 European Christmas Market Spots

Some places do winter just right (Europe, we're looking at you!). With magical lights, festive markets, and cosy atmospheres all over, this list will certainly help you get into the Christmas spirit. With Christmas just around the corner, why not truly lose yourself in the amazing festivities celebrated all around Europe?

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Dutch really go all out for winter with December bringing a fairy-tale mix of twinkling lights and coloured baubles adorning trees and beautiful displays all across the city. The city boasts many wintry events and  Christmas market stalls - which you can check out here - as well as an impressive tree in the heart of Dam Square (an excellent Instagram photo op!). And yes, we think this definitely makes Amsterdam one of the best places to visit during one of the most festive times of the year.

Along with their canals, boathouses, and picturesque parks, Amsterdam is a wonderful city to explore and truly immerse yourself in. With so many festive activities, you’ll never be short of things to do during the day or at night. Oh, and do not forget about some of the best tourist spots, including the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum!

Edinburgh, Scotland

The cultural capital of Scotland is a perfect city for winter. Edinburgh’s winding alleys, Georgian buildings, and dominating castle backdrop make this city the ideal winter getaway! But sealing the deal is the addition of their dreamy Christmas market in December. From handmade gifts, hot festive treats (think mulled wine, churros, bratwurst, belly rumbles, drooling…), live entertainment, and decorated gardens, there’s something festive for everyone in this beautiful city.

Of course, its modern restaurants, art galleries, and endless stores are also great ways to pass the time and become one with the city! Some great eatery spots include Le Di Vin, Piper’s Rest, The Dome, and Panda & Sons.

Tallinn, Estonia

Every year, more than half a million people around the world visit the luxurious Christmas market in Tallinn. Who can blame them with live entertainment for children, high-quality gifts, and all the gingerbread and flavoured mulled wine anyone could ever want! (Yes, we’re also looking at flights!) Located in Tallinn Old Town, it’s one not to miss! Check out more about Tallinn’s market here!

This city also offers ice skating, street art, walking tours, and endless museums, including Kadriorg Art Museum and the Kumu museum, making it easy to spend hours in this beautiful city.

Berlin, Germany

Christmas markets are one of the most famous and beloved winter traditions in Germany. But it is Berlin, the German capital, that truly knows how to do tradition! With a wide variety of markets all over the city, it’s got something for everyone, whether it’s offerings of festive hot drinks, traditional German food, or highly crafted knick-knacks! You can see their extensive list here!

Some of our other favourite things to do in Berlin include exploring the scenic city by bike, visiting landmarks, such as the Bradenburg Gate, and Museum Island for some history and culture.

Milan, Italy

One of the world’s most stylish cities really lights up for Christmas! In Milan, the city is decorated with beautiful lighting, a 60 hut Christmas market, and a huge tree at the Piazza Duomo (another great Insta op, you are welcome!). The Duomo di Milano, the 4th largest cathedral in Europe, offers a Midnight Mass for those wanting a special connection with this fashionable city.

Among all the festivities, Milan has hundreds of great eating spots, shopping opportunities, and architecture that you could admire for hours. Even if you are only in Milan for a short time, it will definitely become one of your most memorable experiences ever.
